Davis Denies Report of Arrest

Rookie cornerback Vontae Davis denied a published report that he was arrested June 9 in Champaign, Ill. Davis, a first-round draft pick by the Miami Dolphins in April out of the University of Illinois, wrote on a blog on yardbarker.com that he was attending a Dolphins' organized team activity that day. Dolphins officials have indicated the same thing. "The only explanation I have is that my wallet was stolen while I was still in school and someone might be impersonating me," Davis wrote on his blog. "During the time I was 'supposedly arrested,' I was actually here in Florida at OTAs.... I am very thankful to be a part of the Miami Dolphins and I do not want to do anything that would bring any negative publicity to me or the team." Four-Year Deal For Steelers’ Starks

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed offensive tackle Max Starks to a four-year contract. The deal reportedly is worth $26.3 million, including $10 million in guaranteed money. The Steelers had named Starks their franchise player in February. He was to have a salary of $8.451 million next season as the franchise player.

Chiefs to Retire Thomas’s Number

The Kansas City Chiefs announced that they'll retire the number of late linebacker Derrick Thomas. Thomas's No. 58 is to be retired during a halftime ceremony at Arrowhead Stadium during the Chiefs' Dec. 6 game against the Denver Broncos, the team announced. Thomas's Pro Football Hall of Fame ring also will be presented to his family, according to the Chiefs. Thomas is to be enshrined into the Hall of Fame in August. According to the Chiefs, he will be the 10th player in franchise history to have his number retired following Jan Stenerud, Len Dawson, Emmitt Thomas, Abner Haynes, Stone Johnson, Mack Lee Hill, Willie Lanier, Bobby Bell and Buck Buchanan. Thomas was selected to nine Pro Bowls, had 126-1/2 career sacks and was named to the all-decade team of the 1990s. He died in February 2000 from injuries suffered in an auto accident.

Final Season For Bruschi?

Linebacker Tedy Bruschi says he's undecided about whether the upcoming season will be his final one in the NFL. "I have to give them everything I have this year and only think about what's next," Bruschi said, according to the Boston Globe. "I'm going to prepare myself for this season, only think about this season, and when the season is over, which is a long ways away, then you think about delving into those decisions.'' Bruschi, 36, is entering his 14th season--and the final one on his contract.

Extension Possible For Jennings

Wide receiver Greg Jennings reportedly is close to agreeing to a contract extension with the Green Bay Packers. "We've been working on some things," Jennings said Monday following a minicamp practice, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "We're coming pretty close, as far as my understanding is, to some type of a deal. But when I say close, we could still be far... if that makes sense. But I think we're coming close. You just never know how long 'close' can take to actually closing the deal." Jennings is entering the final season of a three-year, $2.85 million contract, according to the Journal-Sentinel. He had 80 catches for 1,292 yards and nine touchdowns last season.

Estefans to Own Portion of Dolphins

According to reports by South Florida media outlets, singer Gloria Estefan and her husband, producer Emilio Estefan, have purchased a stake in the Miami Dolphins. The transaction is to be announced Thursday, according to reports by the Miami Herald and South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Dolphins owner Stephen Ross previously struck a deal with singer Jimmy Buffett to rename the team's stadium after Buffett's Land Shark Lager.

Glover Retires

Defensive tackle La'Roi Glover is retiring, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune. "I'd had enough," Glover told the newspaper. "I've always believed that if you're not 100 percent [committed to playing], then it's time to go. You can't go into the season at 95 percent. I had to weigh do I want to play one more year and move my family again or do I want to start a new chapter in my life." Glover, 34, played 13 NFL seasons for the Oakand Raiders, New Orleans Saints, Dallas Cowboys and St. Louis Rams. He amassed 83-1/2 career sacks. He was selected to six Pro Bowls, the first of which came when he had a career-best 17 sacks for the Saints in the 2000 season. Glover had half a sack in 16 games, including nine starts, last season for the Rams.

Falcons Cut Stepanovich

The Atlanta Falcons announced that they'd released offensive lineman Alex Stepanovich. He played in four games for the Falcons last season. He formerly was with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Stallworth Suspended Indefinitely

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has suspended Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte' Stallworth indefinitely without pay, the league has announced. Stallworth pleaded guilty to DUI manslaughter. Under the terms of a plea agreement, he is to serve 30 days in jail and then have 10 years of probation, the first two of which reportedly will be "community controlled" with restrictions on his ability to leave his home. "The conduct reflected in your guilty plea resulted in the tragic loss of life and was inexcusable," Goodell wrote to Stallworth, according to the league's announcement. "While the criminal justice system has determined the legal consequences of this incident, it is my responsibility as NFL Commissioner to determine appropriate league discipline for your actions, which have caused irreparable harm to the victim and his family, your club, your fellow players and the NFL.
