Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre told ESPN, which is carrying Monday night's Vikings-Houston Texans preseason game, that he suspects he might have a cracked rib. According to a story posted on the network's Web site, Favre said that no such injury has been diagnosed but he feels discomfort when taking a deep breath. He's scheduled to play a half Monday against the Texans in his second preseason appearance for the Vikings since coming out of retirement to sign with the team. Favre previously said he's playing with a tear of the rotator cuff in his right shoulder.

The NFL released its amended policy Monday for use of Twitter and other social media platforms by players, coaches and other team personnel on game days, prohibiting such use beginning 90 minutes before a game until following the conclusion of media interviews after a game. The league did not restrict Twitter use by players and coaches on other days. The NFL issued a written announcement that said in part: "The growth of social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook has created important new ways for the NFL and clubs to communicate and connect with fans. The NFL has been at the forefront of the use of new media and will continue to emphasize innovative and appropriate use of these new forms of communication." Cleveland Browns Coach Eric Mangini told reporters Monday he wasn't yet naming a starting quarterback for the regular season. Mangini didn't even name a starter for this week's preseason finale. Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson have been competing for the starting job. Quinn seemed to take the lead with a sharp outing in the Browns' last preseason game.

Wide receiver Terrell Owens participated in the Buffalo Bills' practice Monday, the team announced. Owens has missed the club's last three preseason games because of a sprained toe. Coach Dick Jauron has expressed optimism that Owens will be in the lineup for the opening regular season game.

The Cincinnati Bengals placed tight end Ben Utecht on the injured reserve list because of a concussion. The move makes Utecht ineligible to play for the Bengals this season. Also, quarterback Carson Palmer participated in portions of the Bengals' practice Monday. According to the Bengals' Web site, Palmer participated in some throwing drills but did not participate in full team drills. Coach Marvin Lewis left open the possibility of Palmer, who's been plagued by a sprained ankle, playing in this week's preseason finale, according to the team's Web site.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released wide receiver Dexter Jackson, the team announced. Jackson was a second-round draft choice last year. He played in seven games last season as a rookie and didn't have a catch. He averaged 4.9 yards per punt return and 23.4 yards per kickoff return.

NBC's telecast of the Bears-Broncos game Sunday night had the best overnight rating for an NFL preseason broadcast in five years, the network announced Monday. The game, featuring quarterback Jay Cutler's return to Denver after the Broncos traded him in the offseason, had a 7.3 overnight rating and a 12 share, according to NBC. That's the best overnight rating for an NFL preseason game carried on any network since a Titans-Cowboys game on Aug. 30, 2004 had an 8.2 rating and a 13 share, NBC announced.

The Kansas City Chiefs have dismissed Chan Gailey as their offensive coordinator, the team announced Monday. The Chiefs announced that Gailey "has been relieved of his duties as offensive coordinator" and Gailey's status with the club will be addressed later Monday by Coach Todd Haley. Haley was the offensive coordinator of the Arizona Cardinals before being hired in the offseason as the Chiefs' head coach. The Chiefs have struggled on offense during the preseason. The shakeup of the coaching staff comes with quarterback Matt Cassel sidelined by a knee injury that reportedly could keep him out of the lineup in the regular season opener.

Linebacker Tedy Bruschi announced his retirement Monday after 13 NFL seasons, all with the New England Patriots. "This would be so much harder for me if there were goals left I wanted to accomplish," Bruschi said at a morning news conference. "... Every player's career, every player in that locker room's career, is going to have a beginning, a middle and an end, and today is my end." Bruschi, 36, played on three Super Bowl-winning teams with the Patriots and was selected to the Pro Bowl in the 2004 season. He resumed his career after suffering a stroke in February 2005. Bruschi underwent surgery to have a hole in his heart repaired following his stroke and returned to the Patriots to play nine games in the 2005 season. Quarterback Tom Brady said during a radio interview Monday that he expects to play in the New England Patriots' regular season opener at home against the Buffalo Bills on Sept. 14. Brady hurt his right shoulder during Friday's preseason game against the Washington Redskins at FedEx Field. He had his shoulder driven into the turf on a hit by Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth.
