Study Finds High Dementia, Arthritis Rates

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009
A study commissioned by the NFL to assess the health and well-being of retired players found that they reported being diagnosed with dementia and other memory-related diseases at a rate significantly higher than that of the general population. The study also found a greatly increased rate of arthritis being reported by the former NFL players but found reduced rates of diabetes, heart attacks and strokes. The 37-page study was conducted by the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research and its findings were based on a telephone survey of 1,063 retired NFL players conducted last November and December. Researchers found that 6.1 percent of retired NFL players age 50 and above reported receiving a diagnosis of dementia, Alzheimer's disease or other memory-related disease, compared to 1.2 percent for all comparably aged U.S. men, and 1.9 percent of players ages 30 to 49 indicated they'd received such a diagnosis, compared

Anderson Named Browns’ Starter

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009
UPDATED (12:32 p.m.)... The Cleveland Browns have made a starting quarterback switch, with Brady Quinn being benched in favor of Derek Anderson. Coach Eric Mangini announced Wednesday that Anderson will start this weekend against the Cincinnati Bengals. The Browns are winless and Mangini benched Quinn during last Sunday's loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Anderson threw three interceptions in his relief appearance, but now gets his chance as the starter. Quinn and Anderson competed for the starting job entering the season. Mangini had vowed to stick with whichever quarterback he chose as the starter, but now is making a switch after only three games. Mangini announced his pick this time. When he chose Quinn over Anderson entering the season, he attempted to keep the decision under wraps temporarily for competitive reasons. But the choice didn't stay secret as long as Mangini had hoped, being revealed by media reports and a

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009
According to The Post's Les Carpenter, roughly 75 people were in attendance Tuesday at a church in Southwest D.C. to hear Michael Vick give a cautionary speech warning them not to make the same sort of mistakes that he'd made. "Anything can happen when you're fighting dogs at 2 or 3 in the morning," Vick said, according to Carpenter's account in Wednesday's Post. "I'm blessed to be before you and still have my life. It's like standing on the corner and dealing drugs. It's a criminal life." Vick made the afternoon appearance at Covenant Baptist Church along with representatives of the Humane Society. He has made a series of appearances in several cities in recent months as part of the Humane Society's anti-dogfighting campaign. "I didn't care what I was doing," Vick said Tuesday of the early stages of his NFL career. "I didn't care about what was happening

Jags Consider Future Games in Orlando

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009
The Jacksonville Jaguars are considering the possibility of playing some future home games in Orlando, Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver told the Orlando Sentinel. "There's certainly the possibility that we would play some out-of-market games," Weaver told the newspaper. "If it happened, Orlando would be the best option and most reasonable location. "In the past, we have reached out to try and cultivate that market and haven't had as much success as we would have liked. We probably need to do a better job. That's a given. We are looking at a long-term strategy and thinking out of the box on how we can build a fan base in Orlando." Weaver told the newspaper that such a decision probably would be made in conjunction with the NFL's proposed expansion of the regular season, likely to 18 games per team, within the next few years. The owners have discussed lengthening the

According to the Associated Press, the Pittsburgh Steelers might deactivate wide receiver Limas Sweed this weekend in favor of Shaun McDonald. Sweed dropped a pass in the end zone during Sunday's loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. "Quite frankly, he's not catching the football when he's deep down the field," Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin said, according to the AP. "He's got some tape that shows that. He's got to shake that off. If and when he's given his next opportunity to make a similar play, he better make it."

Study Finds Increased Dementia Rate

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009
A study commissioned by the NFL found that memory-related diseases such as Alzheimer's disease have been diagnosed among former players at a significantly higher rate than among the general population, the New York Times reported. The study was conducted by the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research and a summary of its findings was distributed to league officials this month, the Times reported. According to the Times report, researchers conducted a phone survey last year of more than 1,000 former players and found that 6.1 percent of players age 50 and above reported receiving a diagnosis of dementia, Alzheimer's disease or other memory-related disease, five times the national average cited in the survey, and 1.9 percent of players ages 30 to 49 indicated they'd received such a diagnosis, 19 times the national average. The study questioned the reliability of phone surveys to assess dementia rates, the Times reported,
