Warner announces retirement

UPDATED (3:42 p.m.)... Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner announced his retirement Friday. "It's been 12 unbelievable years, 12 of the best years of my life," Warner said at a news conference. "But... I'm excited about what lies ahead of me." Warner, who turns 39 in June, steps away from the sport after a 12-year NFL career in which he improbably became one of the most prolific passers in league history and led two franchises, the St. Louis Rams and the Cardinals, to Super Bowl appearances. Warner played well this season, throwing for 3,753 yards and 26 touchdowns as the Cardinals won the NFC West and beat the Green Bay Packers, 51-45, in overtime in the highest-scoring postseason game in league history. Eagles promote Roseman to GM

The Philadelphia Eagles promoted one of their longtime front office executives, Howie Roseman, to general manager, the team announced Friday. Roseman has been with the Eagles for 10 years and most recently was the club's vice president of player personnel. He joined the team in 2000 as its staff counsel and salary cap specialist. He replaces Tom Heckert, who left the Eagles to become the general manager of the Cleveland Browns.

Parade for Saints, after win or loss

The city of New Orleans will have a parade for the Saints two days after the Super Bowl, even if they lose. According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the city plans to have a parade on Feb. 9, whether the Saints win or lose against the Indianapolis Colts on Feb. 7 in Miami. The exact time and route for the parade have not yet been determined, according to the Times-Picayune.

Freeney not practicing

According to the Indianapolis Star, Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney missed his second straight practice Thursday because of a sprained right ankle. Team president Bill Polian has said that Freeney will be ready to play in the Super Bowl, according to the Star. However, Colts Coach Jim Caldwell said that Freeney might remain in Indianapolis on Sunday to receive treatment rather than attending the Pro Bowl on Sunday with the club's other selected players, according to the Star.

Rams’ Jackson accused of assault

The former girlfriend of St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson accused him of assaulting her while she was nine months pregnant, according to multiple reports. The woman filed a complaint with the Las Vegas police department, according to the reports. According to an online report by CBS Sports, the woman accused Jackson of pushing her repeatedly to the ground during an argument last March. Rams Coach Steve Spagnuolo said in a written statement released by the team: "We are aware of the situation involving Steven Jackson. We are in the process of gathering information. We are always concerned with issues involving our players."

Sanchez has knee examined

According to multiple reports, New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez had his right knee examined in by orthopedist James Andrews. Sanchez visited Andrews on Wednesday in Birmingham and it's not immediately clear if Sanchez will undergo knee surgery, the Associated Press reported. Sanchez missed one game in December after hurting the knee during a game against the Buffalo Bills. The injury was described at the time as a sprained posterior cruciate ligament. The rookie returned to the lineup and helped the Jets to reach the AFC championship game before losing to the Indianapolis Colts.

Broncos promote LB coach to d-coordinator

The Denver Broncos promoted linebackers coach Don (Wink) Martindale to defensive coordinator, the team announced Thursday. He replaces Mike Nolan, who left the team after the season. The Broncos announced that it was a mutual decision. "We are excited to name Wink Martindale our defensive coordinator," Broncos Coach Josh McDaniels said in a written statement. "Wink is the perfect fit to lead our defense after earning the respect of our players and coaching staff for the job he did this past year working with our linebackers. Underwood to sing anthem

Singer Carrie Underwood is to perform the national anthem at the Super Bowl, the NFL announced. Queen Latifah is to sing "America the Beautiful" during the pregame show, according to the league's announcement. It previously was announced that The Who will perform at halftime of the Feb. 7 game in Miami, to be televised by CBS.

NFL enforcing trademarks in N.O.

There reportedly could be a potential legal tussle over whether the NFL and the New Orleans Saints own the trademark rights to the phrase, "Who dat." According to a report by New Orleans television station WWL, the NFL has sent cease and desist orders to merchants in New Orleans who are selling merchandise with the slogan "Who dat" on it. "The NFL is not a company that I want to rock the boat with, but I definitely want to look into it further to see what my rights are," one shop owner, Lauren Thom, told the TV station. "... They're telling me not to print any more shirts and to get rid of the inventory that I have because it says the words 'Who dat' and it has a gold fleur-de-lis on the shirt." Dolphins kicker added to Pro Bowl team

Miami Dolphins kicker Dan Carpenter was added to the AFC Pro Bowl team. Carpenter replaces San Diego's Nate Kaeding, who suffered a groin injury during an AFC practice this week. Carpenter becomes the second Dolphins player in the game, which is to be played Sunday in Miami. He joins safety Yeremiah Bell. "It's an honor to be named to the Pro Bowl and especially this year since the game will be played in Miami," Carpenter said, according to the Dolphins' Web site. "I am looking forward to representing the Dolphins." Carpenter connected on 25 of 28 field goal attempts and 37 of 38 extra points this season. He also had two game-winning field goals. Kaeding's injury, reportedly a slightly torn groin muscle, came on the heels of his three missed field goal tries in the Chargers' season-ending playoff loss to the New York Jets.
