Clemson’s Ford is fastest receiver

Sunday, February 28th, 2010
Clemson wide receiver Jacoby Ford was timed at 4.28 seconds in the 40-yard dash Sunday at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis. According to the NFL's Web site, Ford's time matched the second-fastest ever recorded at the combine, behind only the 4.24 seconds of running back Chris Johnson, now with the Tennessee Titans, in 2008. Ford's time tied the 4.28 seconds run by Jerome Mathis in 2005 as the fastest for a wide receiver at the combine, according to the league's Web site.

Reports: Jets poised to release RB Jones

Sunday, February 28th, 2010
INDIANAPOLIS--According to multiple reports, the New York Jets don't plan to pay a $3 million roster bonus that's due to tailback Thomas Jones in his contract and likely will release him. According to the reports, it is unlikely that the two sides will agree to a restructured contract to keep the veteran running back with the team. He is to have a $2.8 million salary next season in addition to his roster bonus. Jones ran for 1,402 yards and 14 touchdowns this past season. He has rushed for 9,217 yards and 62 touchdowns in 10 NFL seasons for the Arizona Cardinals, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Chicago Bears and Jets. Jones has topped 1,100 rushing yards in each of the last five seasons after failing to reach 1,000 yards in any of his first five seasons. He turns 32 in August. Shonn Greene would take over as the Jets' starter at

McCoy says he belongs in QB conversation

Sunday, February 28th, 2010
INDIANAPOLIS--Texas quarterback Colt McCoy said this weekend he feels he deserves to be mentioned in the conversation about the top quarterbacks available in the draft. "I set huge expectations for myself," McCoy said. "I definitely see myself up there. I don't pay attention to what people say about me.... My height is a knock---6 [foot] 1 and a quarter, that's what God gave me. I'm going to do the best I can with it." McCoy said those who question his lack of size should remember that the New Orleans Saints' Super Bowl-winning quarterback, Drew Brees, is listed at an even 6 feet tall. "I hope you guys see that," McCoy told reporters. "I definitely see that." McCoy continues to work his way back from the shoulder injury that he suffered during the collegiate national championship game against Alabama. He said "there's nothing structurally wrong with my shoulder" but he

Rams not tipping hand on top pick

Sunday, February 28th, 2010
INDIANAPOLIS--The St. Louis Rams, naturally, have not been tipping their hand at the NFL scouting combine about what they plan to do with the top overall selection in the draft in April. "We'll do what's best for our football team," Rams Coach Steve Spagnuolo said. "We haven't fully gotten to that point and made that assessment." Most of the top-pick speculation has focused on two defensive tackles, Ndamukong Suh of Nebraska and Gerald McCoy of Oklahoma, and one quarterback, Oklahoma's Sam Bradford. Many talent evaluators say that Suh and McCoy are clearly the two best players available in the draft. "If I'm number one, I'd be happy," Suh said this weekend. "If not, I'll move on to the next team that wants me."

Bills say they won’t re-sign T.O.

Sunday, February 28th, 2010
INDIANAPOLIS--The Buffalo Bills won't re-sign wide receiver Terrell Owens. The team announced Saturday that it won't offer contracts to Owens, fellow wide receiver Josh Reed and defensive end Ryan Denney. All become unrestricted free agents on Friday. "We wanted to inform all three players ahead of the start of the free agency period so they could begin making their plans," Bills General Manager Buddy Nix said in a written statement released by the club. "We just felt that was the right thing to do. All three have represented our organization with class and we thank them for their dedication and hard work." Owens spent one season with the Bills after being released by the Dallas Cowboys. Earlier Saturday, Baltimore Ravens Coach John Harbaugh left open the possibility when addressing reporters that his team might have interest in Owens.

OT change considered

Saturday, February 27th, 2010
UPDATED (6:06 p.m.)... INDIANAPOLIS--The NFL is considering a possible change to the sport's sudden-death overtime format. The proposal would eliminate the possibility of a team winning a postseason game with a field goal on the opening possession of overtime. The new format potentially could go into effect during the playoffs next season if it receives the necessary approval by the franchise owners next month. Under the proposal, the club that gets the opening possession of overtime could win the game by scoring a touchdown. It that team gets a field goal, the other club would get a possession and would have a chance to win with a touchdown or tie with a field goal. If that team gets a tying field goal, the game would be sudden death from then on. If neither team scores on its first possession of overtime, the game would proceed on a sudden-death basis.

Cards say Boldin could be traded

Saturday, February 27th, 2010
INDIANAPOLIS--The Arizona Cardinals aren't ruling out trading wide receiver Anquan Boldin this offseason. "Our approach with Anquan is really the same as what it was last year: We're going to consider all our options," General Manager Rod Graves said here Saturday "... We'll go through what the options are throughout the offseason, and make the decision that's best for our team." Boldin has clashed with team officials in the past over his contract and the Cardinals previously have indicated a willingness to listen to trade offers for him, without completing a deal. "We're going to look at all the options regarding Anquan and regarding all our players," Coach Ken Whisenhunt said Saturday. Whisenhunt and Graves said the Cardinals are comfortable with the idea of former first-round draft choice Matt Leinart taking over as the club's starter at quarterback following the retirement of Kurt Warner.

Ryan regrets gesture

Saturday, February 27th, 2010
INDIANAPOLIS--New York Jets Coach Rex Ryan said Saturday he regrets the incident in the Miami area before the Super Bowl in which he made an obscene gesture at a fan while attending a mixed martial arts event. "Regardless of the circumstances, I made a mistake," Ryan said at the NFL scouting combine. "I realize that. I've made a bunch of mistakes in my life. Just add that to the big list.... I'm no Boy Scout. I don't pretend to be. But I'm trying to be more mature." The Jets fined Ryan $50,000 for the episode. Ryan had a high profile in his rookie season as an NFL head coach, becoming a media darling in New York while leading the Jets to a surprising appearance in the AFC title game. "Unfortunately you can't jump right back into that AFC championship game," he said Saturday. "We're 0-0, like everyone else. We

Bradford not ruling out playing for Redskins

Saturday, February 27th, 2010
INDIANAPOLIS--Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford was asked Saturday at the NFL scouting combine about his Native American heritage and whether that would create a dilemma for him if he were to be drafted by the Washington Redskins. Bradford, who is of Cherokee descent, declined to discuss the subject at length, saying: "I'm not going to address that issue." But when a reporter asked him during his media availability if that would prompt him to ask the Redskins not to draft him, Bradford said: "No." Some Native Americans have been critical of the team's nickname, calling it derogatory, and have challenged it in legal proceedings. The Redskins have the fourth overall selection in the NFL draft in April and could be seeking a quarterback. Bradford and Notre Dame's Jimmy Clausen are widely regarded as the top two quarterbacks available. Both met with reporters Saturday. Neither is scheduled to participate in the

Maryland’s Campbell dazzles at combine

Saturday, February 27th, 2010
INDIANAPOLIS--University of Maryland offensive tackle Bruce Campbell has become a standout performer at the NFL scouting combine. Campbell, who was regarded by many draft analysts as a likely first-round pick in April entering the combine, had an eye-catching performance in the 40-yard dash Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium. He was timed unofficially at 4.78 and 4.81 seconds, according to the league-owned NFL Network. Campbell's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, called it a record-setting performance that should boost Campbell's draft stock. Rosenhaus, writing on Twitter, called Campbell's time "unprecedented." Rosenhaus wrote later: "Bruce Campbell ran the best 40 time ever for an offensive lineman and at 314 [pounds] he will now be a surefire top 10 pick in the draft!" Campbell had a more-than-respectable 34 lifts of a 225-pound weight bar in the bench press Friday.
